Volunteer Opportunities
The Friends also offer many interesting and challenging volunteer opportunities. Friends volunteers can help in the Used Bookstore, either assisting customers or sorting items, or throughout the Library system -- even at your favorite branch library.
How You Can Help in the Bookstore
Bookstore Desk Workers: The duties include counting money and working the desk for a 3.5-hour shift. The volunteer is responsible for helping the public when they are paying for their items. The volunteer is mainly sitting for the 3.5 hours. Volunteers also help out by straightening the shelves.
Current openings: See the Library's volunteer page for details.
Substitutes: The duties are the same for the desk worker, but instead of a regular schedule substitutes are called on an as-needed basis. If a permanent volunteer is absent for any reason a substitute is called in. You can decline when called if you are unable to help on the day and time you are called.
Current openings: See the Library's volunteer page for details.
Bookstore Sorters: Volunteers help with sorting daily donations by subject matter, then placing items in the Bookstore. These hours can be flexible: 2-4 hours weekly, biweekly, or monthly.
Current openings: Call for details.
Bookstore Stockers: Volunteers are needed to help stock the store. Duties include checking the store to see what stock is needed for the day, selecting the items, pricing them and then putting the items back into the store.
Current openings: Call for details.
Bookstore Stocker Substitutes: The duties are the same as a bookstore stocker, but volunteers serve on an on-call basis as needed. You may decline when called if you are unable to help on the day and time you are called.
Current openings: Call for details.
Volunteering Outside the Bookstore
All volunteers help the Library -- be it through funds raised by the Bookstore, memberships or by directly volunteering in a section or branch. The Friends of the Wichita Public Library also are looking for volunteers to help with publicity needs, such as writing newsletters or staffing information booths, assisting with the clerical work of processing memberships, and serving on the Friends Board of Governors. See the Library's volunteer page for details.
