Conclusion
Wichita will continue to grow, as will its public library. This year, a million plus visitors will seek out Library programs, take their children to branch storytimes, participate in book discussion groups, and most importantly, seek out those books which will reunite them to the human experience - literature, philosophy, religion, language, history and fiction. At many different levels, they will find methods of expression peculiar to our humanity - language, dialogue, reflection, imagination and metaphor - a complete tool kit for the mind and a master blueprint for life long learning.
In the past decade, having exhausted tax-based avenues of financial support, the Wichita Public Library, in partnership with the Library Foundation and the community, began implementing a comprehensive strategic plan, a blueprint for its financial future. Through an aggressive grants program, Library collections have been rebuilt in part. The necessary groundwork and systems for systemwide automation is a reality. Privately underwritten programming has been addressing community interests and ethnicity as funding allows.
Working closely with the Director of Libraries and his staff, the Foundation Board has established a tradition of excellence, growth and positive change. They have done so by talking one to one with key personnel in Wichita’s businesses and foundations. They have raised $1,250,000 since 1990. Through its sound and professional money management, the Library Foundation’s endowment fund has grown to $661,495, the result of the generosity of local individuals and foundations.
With the help of your response to the National Endowment Challenge grant the Wichita Public Library will continue to build a tradition of excellence in the Humanities for this and future generations. The NEH grant will leverage financial support to new levels and reaffirm the generosity of existing donors. The businesses, foundations and the entire community of Wichita stand ready to respond to this challenge.
Currently, the Humanities collections are on their knees, struggling to stand. We ask for this chance to finally, in perpetuity, rebuild the position of the Humanities in Wichita into a full, upright stature. We ask for your positive consideration of this proposal, your financial support and thank you for your time spent in its review.
