Awards and Recommended Lists for Kids & Teens

These awards and lists typically include a mix of titles aimed at a variety of ages of youth.

  • Mildred L. Batchelder Award
    Given to the most outstanding children’s book originally published in a language other than English in a country other than the United States.
  • Pura Belpré Award
    Presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
  • Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards
    A prestigious honor in the field of children’s and young adult literature, given annually to authors and illustrators of merit.
  • Odyssey Award
    Annual award given to the producer of the best audiobook produced for children and/or young adults.
  • Schneider Family Book Award
    Honors an author or illustrator for a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences.
  • Cooperative Children's Book Center
    Books of the week from a unique research library collecting works aimed at youth audiences, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

  • ALSC Children's Notables
    A yearly list of the best of the best in children's books, recordings, and videos.
  • Caldecott Medal
    Annually awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
  • (Andrew) Carnegie Medal
    Honors the most outstanding video productions for children.
  • Coretta Scott King Book Awards
    Given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values.
  • Geisel Award
    Given annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers.
  • Newbery Medal
    Annually awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
  • Robert F. Sibert Medal
    Awarded annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished informational book.
  • William Allen White Children's Book Award
    The first statewide readers' choice book award in the United States - and an annual tradition administered by Emporia State University.

Media Awards for Teens

  • Teens' Top Ten
    A teen choice list, where teen readers can choose their favorite books of the previous year and vote on the winners.
  • Alex Award
    Given annually to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18.
  • Margaret A. Edwards Award
    Honors an author, as well as a specific body of his or her work, for significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature.
  • Michael L. Printz Award
    A literary award that annually recognizes the "best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit".
